Big Star Clothing

Embracing an alternative approach to design

Category: Apparel Design, Illustration, Photography, Catalog Design, Seasonal Strategies

Objective:

Big Star is a denim and apparel company based out of Los Angeles. I was allowed to work with an in-house screen printing team along with tailors and seamstresses that produced the graphics on-site with a remarkable variety of cuts, textiles, and production techniques. The brand required a designer who was familiar with current trends and able to produce fresh seasonal graphics and styles.

Solution:

An original and unique approach to a design that encompasses the feel of a classic tee from your father's closet. I consumed myself with research and looked to different aspects of Americana traditional styling to develop several seasonal lines for the brand. The first was an inspirational and aspiring line that utilized several distressing methods and fabrics that were conducive to this style of printing. The next was a Blue Collar Americana work-wear series that was based on the traditional signage and advertisements from the 1940s-1960s. The last line was inspired by road trips and vagabonds. It utilized unique production techniques to mimic the feel of the tees from this era.
